1998 BMW 540i/6

Sorry it's so quiet, but I was recording in the cabin after all. You probably will have to jack the volume up. I promise there are no loud noises at the end to freak you out.

Noise starts about 0:40 in.

Mystery squeak that has been troubling me for the past 4 months. It is only there if the car is moving. Engine speed has no effect. Clutch in or out has no effect. Lately, it does get a little louder when the brakes are applied (It is not the brakes. All four corners were taken out, cleaned, and reassembled. Nothing stuck in the dust shields either.)

EDIT: Found out it was the drive shaft center support bearing.

  • for almost a year i've been convinced there was either debris in the hvac blower motor, or a hamster was running on a wheel somewhere in or under the car... it drives me crazy!!! this is the exact noise my 99 540i/6 makes from around 25mph and up - i'll stop looking for the elusive hamster wheel, and go ahead and replace the center support bearing ;-) thanks for posting this!!
