Bruce Springsteen No Surrender Acoustic in Toronto with the E Street Band 26/7/1984

Well, we bursted out of class
Had to get away from those fools
We learned more from a 3-minute record, baby
Than we ever learned in school
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my heart begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just want to close your eyes
And follow your dreams down

Chorus:
Well, we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like soldiers in the winter's night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Well, now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore blood brothers against the wind
Now I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us home
Across the open yards
Well maybe we'll cut someplace of own
With these drums and these guitars

'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in the stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
You say it ain't ours anymore to win
I want to sleep beneath
Peaceful skies in my lover's bed
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic dreams in my head

Once we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Blood brothers in a stormy night
With a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

  • A Vow to Defend....

  • En souvenir de mon amie Coco décédée à l'âge de 20 ans à la prison de Nantes 1988 !

I'm extremely jealous, I've been a fan since 84 - but didn't get to see him live until three years ago. Still epic, but not the shows I had heard about or read about. And no stories, which is what I had been longing to hear. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it ... once I stopped crying. Of course I would have cried more if I had known it was the first and last time I'd see Clarence live.

  • Springsteen at his absolute best!

  • 4 hours concert straight

  • Best concert I ever attended. Supposed to start at 8pm. Curtain opened at 7:55 to reveal a giant US Flag. At 7:58 the flag drops and Bruce hits the opening bar of Born in the USA. He finally said good bye at 12:10.

  • I, too, was at this concert. Wow, what a night. Over four hours straight! All the band...Stevie, Clarence (what a character- was wearing a big red jacket!), the entire band, and of course, the Boss! Exibition Stadium was packed...it was fantastic! Our seats were so close I could have literally reached out and touched him. Thanks for the most amazing memories!

  • love this versiion - been a favorite of mine for so may years

  • perfect version of this song.

  • I was at this concert. I was 14 years old! Thanks for this!
