Messing with concepts of alienation, this "Beached" clip for David Kilgour's 1994 Flying Nun album "Sugar Mouth" was largely shot at St Bathans in North Otago, home of Blue Lake, created by large-scale mid 19th century gold mining and now surrounded by weird limestone mounds resembling a planet of undetermined identity. Assisted by Hamish, David & Stuart were accommodated by the Vulcan Hotel proprietor who provided whiskey for the final script writing session, and also entertained HK with a nocturnal visit from the resident ghost.
Having noticed that the over-exposed footage from previous 16mm accidents had a lovely look to it, Mr Page decided to shoot the whole clip over-exposed by 4-stops (or 16X too much light) to create an unearthly feel to the footage.
Further shooting was done at various Dunedin locations including outside the Cadburys' chocolate factory, in the Dunedin Hospital boiler rooms, at night in the Octagon, and at Aramoana on the beach and the mole.
