The terrible conditions at Kinshasa ZOO.
The African Conservation Taskforce is having urgent discussions with the Ministry of the Environment, the Congolese Conservation Institute (ICCN) and the Congolese Institute of Zoological and Botanical Gardens to see how we can implement Improvements to the zoological gardens and assist the animals it is holding.
We will seek to Implement a 3 phase Plan:
1. Immediate Support.
Provision of Veterinary care and for all animals in the facility.
Rehabilitate improve and construct new animal enclosures and facilities to WAZA standards.
Move the Chimpanzees and Bonobos into appropriate forested "Sanctuary facilities" within the DR Congo where they can receive appropriate care and rehabilitation.
2. Capacity Building
Provide training for Zoo workers and animal carers.
Install a management support team to assist and Train Congolese personnel
3. Long term support to conservation
Open an Environmental and Zoological education facility.
Provide facilities for the rescue and rehabilitation of the Victims of the Bushmeat and illegal pet trade.
Provide a taskforce to assist the Enforcement of CITES in Western and Eastern DR Congo.

@aliveinsd Not a zoo, a kind of park where the animals could be free in large surroundings, set these animals out of cages. Could WSPA or WWF support this?

These animals live better than most of the local people. They don't see anything wrong here. True, I too see misery for the animals, but I must place that thought into right context and relative to general conditions of the Congo.
Send $ to build a better zoo.

Paradoxically enough, quite the opposite might be true: Invest your money in this zoo, so they can improve the conditions of the animals and attract tourists to Congo and open a source of money for this poor country. Where else would you want these creatures shown in captivity than in their natural (i.e. African) habitat? And don't be fooled: It is in the zoo's economic interest to show the animals in a natural surrounding. Visitors feel with the beasts and just don't like conditions like this.

The zoo should be closed down-1 easy step. Invest your money in researchers working with local people in bonobo habitats.
