On March 29, 2004 we hiked the 1.5 mile trail into Lava Falls, dropping about 2500 feet in elevation. At the river, a private party of kayakers and rafters ran the rapid. If you ran the rapid on this day, this could be you!
The hike is strenuous and difficult. The trail is not always easily seen. The first section is across and down a lava field, and the last section is down a narrow scree slope which becomes more difficult on the return trip. The scree slope is also wedged down between a corridor of lava rock, which becomes very hot during the day light hours. We stashed water on the way down as recommended. If you do not deal with heat and physical activity very well, this hike is not for you. It's more of a climb than a hike.
Wow - that was an awesome capture of the raft flipping!
