I've been listening to some 1920s jug band music lately (such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwo6HVTacYs) and thought I'd show the basics. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jug_(musical_instrument)# for more technical details including the detail that I should not have been touching the jug at all with my lips: placing them close to the bottle, but flapping freely allows more high end frequency content.

Caution: I have no skill and suck at this! The only point of posting this is to share the knowledge that in addition to the usual end blown method of playing bottles, one can also buzz above them at their resonant frequency and its harmonics, using them as a resonating chamber.

  • My intuition is telling me that you aren't supposed to play those like brass instruments, consedering you aren't really making them vibrate all that much. You should blow across the top like a flute, you still can get overtones that way. (and you aren't even getting any tones at all here.)

  • @kratanuva725 Thanks for the comment, buzzing is a style used in 1920s jug band music, check out the link in the description. It's very different from the usual way of playing bottles.
