http://www.keepingchickensnewsletter.com Chickens are not allowed within Salem's residential areas and Dana Matthews of Chickens in the Yard is hoping to persuade Salem city council to revise it's ordinance to allow residents in Salem to keep a few backyard hens, for eggs and as pets. This item from living culture also features a chicken keeper (and her backyard flock) from Portland Oregon where they do allow backyard chickens and have the benefits of keeping a few chickens. This is part 1 - part 2 is available here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlTD3k2bHn0

  • Do you guys have an update on your progress? I think proposals such as this are making headway in many chicken friendly cities across the United States. Even Cleveland, OH is now a chicken friendly city. I think a few hens just makes good sense... I wish you well with this venture. People do need to keep up their property so it's properly presented, clutter becomes a health issue quickly.

  • Have any of your neighbors decided to keep chickens as well?

  • @woodturningjohn

well they probably think nobosy would be so crazy to have a pig in the garden but believe that if more and more people where holding pigs in the garden they would make a new law that doesnt allows pigs ;-D

  • @woodturningjohn

    then eat the pigeons!

  • My city allows chickens. The # of chickens depends on the size of your yard. I hope they changed the law. Good luck.

  • I live in a town that has a silly law, no chickens but you can have pigeons.???

  • Congrats on getting the law changed.

  • Any progress on changing the law?>

  • I hope you get your chickens. That is a stupid law. No wonder I don't live in Oregon. Montana allows anything. I Love Chickens!!!!!

  • I have chickens, and provide eggs for my neighbors also. My neighbors enjoy bringing table scraps to the chicks. My husband also trades eggs for other foods. Having chickens works out great, and saves us some $, while also being great pets!
