Deism is NOT 'religious" in itself. Some religions might be deistic, some are theistic, some agnostic or even atheistic. Deism is a non-religion, it's a intellectual belief-leaning/opinion or at most a "philosophy"{AT MOST}.
Deism IS comptible if it is "agnostic-deism", STRONG Deism is'nt, but nor is STRONG Atheism[agnostic-atheism is}.
It was, as far I see it, a rhetorical device, to create a comical contrast between him and his audience. Maybe it is a strawman, but surely not one meant to mispresent someone in a negative way.
Completely agree, Deism is not a position i'd be willing to take either. I don't even understand why you need to adopt deism to stop calling yourself an atheist, why can't you just stop calling yourself an atheist...
It'd be like if I said I'm going to stop eating at mcdonalds and the only way that is possible is to eat at burger king. Why couldn't I just stop eating at mcdonalds? heh.
