This video was taken in the ancient bristlecone pine forest which is located in the White Mountains, above Bishop and Big Pine, CA.

The large tree to my right in the video in a living ancient bristlecone, but most likely a young one of perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 years old. They are known to live as long as 5,000 years old and are the oldest living organisms known to man.

My father took me here as a young boy, and I decided to return with the trumpet and play into the hills. The echo was quite impressive, but I don't think it can be heard in the video.

Once again I'm posting this for fun. My trumpet playing isn't anything special, and this video was taken at 14,246 feet where there isn't so much air. My diaphragm actually started cramping twards the end of the session, as I had been fasting the day before and was low on air.

Either was I hope you all enjoy it. In all their years of life, I wonder how many times the ancient birstlecones got to hear a loud trumpet?

  • THANK you for this! ~~ {I'm sure that Bristlecone Pine by you would thank you for the serenade if she could too!} ;D

My mother's family was from Bishop/Big Pine/Lone Pine areas.. Her father owned Black's Grocery Store, on Main St. in Bishop. We'd like to move back up there! {enough of the rat-race!} lol

Thanks again for the video, and a little time with the ol' Bristlecone Pine! ;)

  • You are welcome. It was my pleasure to play to the old trees.

  • How about you exercise more than just your lungs?

  • Good idea.

  • Did the experiment work? I punched out at 1:23

  • I did get a good feel for the echo and a mean cramp in my side. About what I expected in my hypothesis.

  • Very cool brother...I was there a few years ago and Love Bishop and Lone Pine. I love the Jerky store in Lone Pine.

  • this is off the wall but i like and i can't tell u why. very relaxing

  • Wow these trees were already thousands of years when Jesus Christ was born! Most of the old living trees are those ones of high lands areas or cold climate species with needles shape of leaves. Whereas those broad leaves species of the the rain forests last only for hundreds of years!

  • lmfao.. hahaha!@!@@!

  • awesome vid bro! like a romantic serenade or something! wish the echo would have bled through the video, but it is still cool to see you actually there playin your trumpet! 5 stars

  • a gorgeousity.

  • I love the Bristlecone Pines (Pinus aristata)!!! They can live for 6000 years or so if left undisturbed in the desert mountains, although they do not live as long at low altitudes I have heard. They live up to about 2000 years or so in Colorado.

You should feel the resin spots on the needles and sniff them. We have them in Cheyenne, WY, in landscaping. The needles, grouped in fives, stay on for about 13 years.

  • Yeah! Awesome! I'm sure the bristlecone pines loved the performance.
