Aaron Vetter values the guidance of others so much he launched an effort to help put youngsters on the path to success.

As coordinator of RISE, a community mentoring program based at Lincoln Elementary School, Vetter pairs adults with pupils in need of support.

In its second year, RISE is made up of about 75 mentors and children, boys and girls from third to sixth grade. Mentors include police officers and firefighters, members of churches and nonprofits.

RISE, which stands for Relationship, Integrity, Strength and Example, receives financial backing from the city's education commission.

"Kids with challenges in their lives, who need extra support, that's kind of the reason behind RISE," Vetter said.

"We build a foundation for them and hold their hands, so to speak, as they gain confidence," he said.

Mentors meet with pupils at the elementary school and will follow them to middle school and beyond.

RISE is expanding into the feeder schools of West Frederick and Crestwood Middle. RISE will also be partnering with children at Monocacy Middle.

Mentors receive training and must commit to meeting weekly with their child partner. RISE participants also gather monthly for an evening activity together.
