John Phillip Sousa was equally famous in the 19th Century as an operetta composer rather than the March King. El Capitan is his best work and the source of one of his most well-known marches. Set in Peru, it deals with the story of a corrupt governor who impersonates a bandito, El Capitan, in the hope of overcoming an insurrection. In this scene from ACT 1 of the 1986 Comic Opera Guild production, the revolutionaries anticipate the arrival of El Capitan (John Mc Collum), actually Don Medigua in disguise. To validate his appearance, Medigua sings the hit song of the show, which became the El Capitan march. John McCollum make a departure here from his career in oratorio. This is so fun! I'm doing this show with Vocalessence in Minneapolis this weekend, and it's nice to see it fully-staged.
