Music by Travis Melvin

From the Program Notes

Cage (2008)
As my recital was encroaching upon my life, I realized that I needed more recital-sized pieces. Most of my compositional output is for large ensembles, particularly the Ars Nova Sinfonia, and since I wouldnt be able to have the chamber orchestra perform for my recital, I needed chamber works to fill out the program.
The material for nearly every measure of music in this piece comes from two motives that appear in the opening section, until the appearance of the escape motive that opens up the third section. These motives transform and play off each other, pushing the piece forward until the climax when all three motives are played together. The piece then returns to using the original material to close the piece.
