@cm14g All the official English translations of Pokemon Adventures (VIZ Media/Chuang Yi) use the names Blue for the rival and Green for the girl. It's mostly because of the complexity of the Gen I game releases since Green-version has never been released outside of Japan and Red's rival had to be Blue to match the game releases. And in the games, he is called Blue (HG/SS).

The answer is so that their pokemon would match their names. Red starts with a Bulbasaur that becomes a Venusaur but he trades it to Green for HIS Charizard, whereas Blue keeps HER Squirtle/Blastoise pretty much the entire time. The team rocket computer even remarks that it's funny that they have pokemon that match their names.

Why did the manga makers have to switch up the names.Its so darn confusing.And it didn't make sense Blue wears a blue top and Green wears .... green.

@Hm0ngB0y213 That's a BAD idea. The anime has a habit of taking characters from the game/manga and ruining them. Just... look at what happened with Red. They took the best trainer in Kanto, and created Ash, a character who utterly fails at life.

@PokemonBreeder101 Are you sure they didn't start running out of ideas before that? The Pokemon anime has to be one of the most repetitive shows I've ever seen. Most of the episodes are just the SAME things over and over again.
