They probably should have said "makes a man feel 12 inches long" instead, but I guess they wouldn't have been allowed...

@hsvsv8 Actually petrol was well over 20 cents p/l in 1979 and all TV adds from this time will seem crude and corny by today's standards. I know coz I was around then.

"Valvoline" You know what I mean.

My old man had one in the early 70's and thought he was the king of the road until the undercover cops in a mini cooper S pulled him over

Classic add.........before political correctness was invented!

@thunderlips350 obviously you never travelled up the pacific highway( pre F3) from hornsby to newcastle @ xmas time) ...massive traffic jam.... windows down in the EH and sticking to the vinyl seats :)

Every time I see an HK GTS Monaro I feel a tinge of pain & demand my old man explain why he sold his in the late 70's. His reason was fuel jumped from 7c to 14c. No excuse is my usual reply. Would've been a fantastic family heir loom. haha
The ads back in the day were corny as hell. Still, a great looking car & whilst it couldn't compete with the Phase III GTHO in a straight line, it killed them in the corners.

Monaro is a woman's car?

Cheap? Some stats from ABS and Redbook; New 2009 Commodore about $40,000 and average weekly earnings at $1250 = 32 weeks salary to buy the Commodore. 1968 Monaro at $2575 and average weekly earnings at $64 = 40 weeks to buy the Monaro. A new Monaro then would have taken a much bigger chunk out of the pay packet than a new Commodore today.

Monaro was a sports model, not a base model family sedan like the Commodore. Run the figures again using a 2009 HSV...

@Conniptions886 There was a base model -- like a two-door Kingswood really, with the 186 engine -- seen at 0:21 and 0:43. At 0:47 you can see the Kingswood tail lights and boot treatment. This is not a GTS like the other one featured. The Crawford's TV show "Matlock Police" had the actors bouncing around in a no-frills white HG base model Monaro. The most impractical police car I've ever seen lol.

@rainlori - Actually, Victoria Police did use some Monaros around that time... And if you want to talk really impractical police cars, they used a HSV 427 GTS a few years back, for inner-city duties...
