I heard an interesting interpretation of the book of Job. The argument stated was to the contrary of the usual interpretation. It was that Job's experience of the divine was not as external authority but as inner revelation. There is a passage where Job tries to submit and is told by God (paraphrasing here) "No, stand up and answer like a man!" Also, God says that Job's friends got it wrong when they blamed Job for his suffering, and threatens to punish them. It's subtle but it is there.

Great talk! I have been trying to find out all that I can about Joseph Campbell after watching a documentary based entirely off of his philosophies, Finding Joe. It was such a great film and was so inspiring. It is really encouraging in telling you that you can do whatever you set your mind to, or, in Campbell’s words, to “Follow your bliss.” bitly . com / tke3 8E? r=bb

Yes, very helpful. Especially the connections to Gebser and all things regarding the evolution of consciousness. I like the way Ebert tells the Faustian story of the West, the difference between Job and Prometheus myths. Is he suggesting that (Campbell suggested) the West represents an alterntive to the East (Persia on over) or higher evolutionary stage, from the Way of the Celestial Powers to the Way of Man? Each knight must go alone into the dark forest...

Authority should always be questioned. Just consider the Wizard of Oz. :-)
