Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipelines
Sweden Marine Safety - Part 1 - Safe passage for ships entering Douglas Channel will be achieved using a variety of safety measures.

One such measure is the mandatory use of tethered escort tugboats.

These extremely powerful escort tugs will be tethered to the ships to ensure steering and power redundancy in the event that the ships propulsion or steering system fails.

The tow line between the ship and tug will be of similar construction and capacity to "steelite", which is a high capacity synthetic rope. These ropes have a breaking point in excess of 300 - 500 tonnes and are used all over the world in ship towing operations.

Tethered towing is one of the safety measures we will use to ensure safe ship transits.
