What can you say about this performance? This is Cream at their improvisational best in my opinion. It is Eric who is the real surprise here as he plays in a style way outside of his norm. You can hear him exploring and discovering new sounds as he goes. Jack and Ginger are clearly much more comfortable with this approach, but together this is as close as I've heard them to true improvisation, moving away from the original song structure and melody before bringing it all back together at the end. Here is a quote from John Platt in his book Disraeli Gears, "Instead of Clapton's usual dazzling barrage of blues riffs, ancient and modern, he plays his entire solo as something closer to an Indian raga". Incredible.

  • im so glad you uploaded this one! Owning it, whenever i listen to it i tell myself i have to share it with the world of YouTube, but have always forgotten to actually do so =P I'm quite glad you beat me to it! Its such an interesting rendition, most definitely the only of its kind captured on tape. Apparently this more eastern influenced style was a nod to Mike Bloomfield who played on the same bill as them for those shows and who's instrumental "East-West" was a huge inspiration to Clapton
