Traditional Kata were created by people who applied them in real life situations. Shimabuku learned Kata from aclaimed practitioners of the art. Had occations to apply techniques where tapping out was not an option. Created and taught his style .

@JCMarx I have had the privilege of training under Harold Mitchium quite a few times.
My uncle is Tommy True, so I have had a privileged upbringing in learning the true ways Isshin Ryu is to be taught.

I see that you also have a Ph.d in Okinawan history? I got my education at Okinawa University. We should compare notes. Truth be told, Japanese and Okinawans are some of the worst historians on the planet anyway.
Or, you can just look a little deeper at the video you are posting about here, or visit our dojo here in Oklahoma if you are ever out in our neck of the woods. It's a classical dojo WAY out in the country. We have heating in the summer and air conditioning in the winter.

Because you are such an experienced expert, I am sure you will think about what you have stated here and remove your comments. Having trained with "combat professionals" I am sure they taught you such things as "dry firing" practice with firearms, and how to stand a certain way and hold your weapon with certain details. No single detail is a magic bullet, but every one brings a slight advantage, and in life-or-death combat we take every advantage we can get... every small advantage adds up.

My Sensei trained under Grandmaster Long up until his death.I remember all of the times Sensei Malone would take us to train with Grandmaster Long and Mr.Long always told us of how formidable Soke Shimabuku was especially at 5'2 and 120lbs. "Master Shimabuku would throw the Marines around like ragdolls" Nothing but respect....Osu..
