Andy Griffith's famous 1953 stand-up monologue about college football. It has become one of the most beloved comedy recordings of all time.

The illustrations used in this video were drawn by George Woodbridge, a Mad Magazine artist. The comic illustration appear in Mad Magazine in 1958. You can view the illustration at http://www.collectmad.com/madcoversite/missing_was.html

We edited the illustrations to match the story line. We then used this clip for illustrative purposes during one of our church services here at Cornerstone City Church. http://www.CornerstoneIndy.com

  • I wish I had the opprotunity to meet Mr. Griffith. I would let him know that his home-spun wisdom and big heart has reminded me of my Dad ( 9/1923 to 9/2010 ). This was one of the first comedy recordings that I remember. I wish I could whoop-up some catfish & taters for the both of us sometime. Mr. Griffith.....you are one of the last of the wholesome commedian's left! God Bless you & yours Mr. Griffith. And thank you again for a wonderful education on life. Richard D. Bellingham,WA.

  • I love Andy Griffith!

I never had a Grand Father I would be honored to be his!

His morals and standards of life I cherish...

My the Lord Almighty God of Israel bless him

with all that he desires! AMEN!

  • My dad gave me this 45 record (yes, an actual 45 record, the kind you played on a turntable) when I was a kid. I loved it then, I love it now!

  • @PR0Michael1 - If you really feel that way, I feel sorry for you.

  • I first heard this as a child (it must have just come out). I thought it was funny then, and I still do.

  • They couldn't because they kicked it the whole evening and it never busted. LMAO.

The drawings are beyond funny. And don't foregt about the convicts....

Nice, clean, humor. None of that these days.

14 people wouldn't know funny if you hit them on the head with that very same pumpkin that never busted.

  • I wonder if Tom Hanks' portrayal of Forrest Gump was partly inspired by this sketch.

  • I used to have this on cassette long time ago, thnx for putting this up, I haven't heatd this in years.

  • @MrJDFrog Oh, OK. Now I get you. Thanks for the info. And, yes, you're right - I've never been to Mt Airy.

  • @wmlfan9

Because even today it's really just one street. It's entirely conceivable to me that, in the era that Andy grew up, there might have been some folks from up the holler who had never seen a football game.

  • @jones27557 I bow to your greater knowledge. If you are the descendent of a long line of dirt poor tobacco farmers then you know a lot more about Southern culture than this Yankee. Yes, I see your point. This comedy bit was made in 1953 which was before football became the craze that it now is in the South. And a rural Southerner who had never been out of his local county and had never seen TV might indeed have never heard of football. Thanks for writing.
