  • I think that one thing that people don't consider is that the proto-orthodox Xtians supported a highly structured model with bishops, etc., whereas the Gnostics were much less structured, and shared the responsibilities of their church. Gnostics also were more favorable to women in their church's structure. I think that a lot of the p-o Xtian leaders were preaching a very self-interested model that allowed them to hold onto their own power.

  • If Gnostics believed that the physical world was evil, wouldn't they be MORE apt to accept death? In the Gospel of Judas, Judas is a hero for getting Jesus crucified.

  • Christianity was developing, or "flowering", during the 2nd century, until Marcus Aurelius took control of Rome and started persecuting Christians and fucking shit all up. That led to people like Irenaeus.

  • I can't believe this show completely leaves out Marcus Aurelius. Wasn't he the first emperor to actually make Christianity illegal, or made it illegal to convert people to Christianity. Or something like that.

  • @Ebo9508 It is highly unlikely that the John who taught Polycarp was the Apostle John. No one back then lived into their 90's. Very few people nowadays live that long.

  • Irenaeus did not arise from a vacume. He was a product of what came before him. He was taught by Polycarp, who was taught by John, who was taught by Jesus. Maybe they had good reason to denounce teachings that could not be traced to an original source. The gospel of Thomas was not written by Thomas, unless he lived a couple of centuries.

  • There can only be one truth. The question is... who had the truth ?

Also, what was God's objective ?

  • Exactly. Irenaeus and his compatriots claimed that they were the true Christians and denounced all others as heretics. However, the fact is that there were tons of interpretations of Christ and all claimed to have it right.

  • Who gives Irenaus this right ? He himself ?
