Sea Turtle Nest #2 Hatching @ Carolina Beach, 8/18/2007

This is a short (6:16) video I took of a loggerhead sea turtle nest hatching at Carolina Beach, NC on August 18, 2007. This was the 2nd nest to hatch on CB this summer. This nest bore 130 live hatchlings. I used an infrared light to assist with the night video taping.

It has been estimated that one hatchling in between 2000 and 5000 make it to reproductive age (apx. 20 years ?).

Are you asking how long the nest was there before it hatched? Nests generally hatch 55 to 65 days after they are laid at Carolina Beach.

Because we don't know how loud sounds would affect the hatching. We try to minimize the impact of the humans (spectators and volunteers) who are present on the hatchlings.

I really have no idea what that noise was. It wasn't the turtles, that's for sure. It sounds like it might have been someone getting up from a beach chair nearby. We were all trying very hard to be quiet.
