The FDA has issued a new warning to women who are pregnant regarding the drug topamax. Topamax has FDA approval for use in preventing migraines and treating epilepsy. However, it is sometimes prescribed for other off-label conditions including obesity, bipolar disorder and alcoholism. According to a top level FDA employee speaking on behalf of the organization in March 2011-- "health care professionals should carefully consider the benefits and risks of topamax when prescribing it to women of childbearing age." He went on to say that there are alternative medications that have a lower risk of birth defects and should be considered. Some of the birth defects that have been associated with topamax are cleft lip, cleft palate, cranial malformations and genital malformations.
