"POPEYE THE SAILOR" is a short fan film,
Directed and Starring Michael Valentine as "Popeye" and
Orlando Candelario as "Bar Brawlin' Boyd".
This short was shot in 4 hours in New York City and is designed to show the tone and visual style of a planned Bigger film in the works by VALENTINEproductions to debut in 2012.

What if Popeye really existed? What would he have been like as a young man? This is where i wanted/want to go with Popeye. His adventures before becoming the old craggy face sailor we know and love.

"I am a huge fan of Popeye and am very disappointed with how the character has de-evolved and is barely recognized by many these days. I am trying to take this character, that i am so passionate about, and with the hopes of trying to bring him back into the public view and trying to re-instill the dignity, wit, fun and especially that Urban feel that the original Fleischer cartoons had, only based in a more realistic setting".
-Michael Valentine

So I assume he's already rubbed the Whiffle hen, he seemed pretty strong. I really like this setting, it just looked fantastic. Good luck getting that kind of filming environment and quality for the actual short film!

If you notice, there is a bird in the beginning. Seems you guessed who gets a cameo in this. ; )

Yes, the planned short will be more like a short feature. Much more than this micro short presented here.

Not bad. The actor for Popeye should have had some prosthetics on his face and arms, though.

That was an idea i had aswell, but it didnt fit with what i wanted to do with Popeye, which was have him set in a some what real world, and this be more of his early adventures. Remember Popeye looks the way he looks because 1- hes about 70 years old and 2- the way his forearms are drawn in the comics, are a depiction of strength. So it really didnt need to be taken literal. As long as you convey that he is a strong guy.

This was fantastic. I loved the mid-fight banter, very Fleischer. Can't wait for the finished feature.

I see this being a huge box office success. Nostalgia has a way with audiences (most of the time).

I don't know about the voice, it doesn't really match the real-world environment, I'd say keep the sort of slurring, but tone it down a bit, less cartoony. other than that, this was hilariously awesome
