SYNOPSIS PAINing POORtraits: DESTRUCTION OF THE IMAGE is an experimental documentary about the proverbial artist as truth seeker, trickster and renegade, facing those who seek to destroy him, his art, and reputation. The film follows the Reverend Steven Johnson Leyba, one of the 21st century's most controversial painters, as he explores the nature of his work through its absolute destruction.

Inspired by an ex-lover who once burned and cut up seven of Leyba's paintings in a fury, the incident stirred up a number of questions for the artist: What does it mean when art is destroyed? Does it destroy the intention of the work? Is the idea destroyed? Is the image of the artist destroyed? What is more important, the artist or the art? What if the art created by an artist was continually destroyed, would the artist still be an artist? Who controls the image of the artist?

In the 21st Century (considered by the filmmakers to be the Kali Yuga, or "End Times" in the film) The Artist is considered The Fool or Entertainer, seldom thought of as a pioneer or legitimate critic of culture or the status quo. The art and the artist are no longer a threat to "the system" but considered "esoteric" "ineffectual," "idiotic," or even "sanctioned rebellion," enslaving the artist to an economic fashion game. Only when an artist truly challenges their role as a symbol does art begin to have a profound affect on society.

The film is an allegory for every TRUE ARTIST who creates, destroys and is a renegade, fighting globalization, celebrity, consumerism, governments, multi-nationals, and the growing ineffectiveness of today's activism. In the movie Leyba takes on the Monsanto corporation that makes genetically modified foods. CURRENT SITUATION • The project is entirely self-funded and scheduled to be released Halloween 2012
