My NES remake of Daft Punk's classic song...

Featured in the game D-Pad Hero! http://www.dpadhero.com

The NSF which this recording is based on is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=45...
Whee, it fits in 16K!

In case you can't make out the words: Don't feel bad, it's Mario the referee from Punch Out!! singing. ;-)

Sounds more like Sega Game Gear/Master System than Nintendo NES

From glancing at the Game Gear hardware specs, it looks like that console has similar basic audio capabilities (3 square wave channels, 1 noise), so maybe it's not surprising that the output can sound similar to the NES chip. I never owned a GG or SMS, though; any soundtracks to recommend?

so you're saying this is made ONLY with sounds from the snes chip?

so in theory you could have a game with a song that cool 20 years ago? (I mean, I have troubles imagining that none of the audio composers back then just didnt have the inspiration to make a song as cool as 1:50) or is there a limitation to what the snes could do and you ignored it? (like, 8 audio channels, or whatever, I dunno)

@ExtraZorgy it's NES chip only, yes (SNES is completely different). This song _is_ featured in a game, it's called D-Pad Hero. You can download the ROM and play it on an emulator, or preferably on a PowerPak. Or you can buy a reproduction cartridge (there are a few sites that offered it, last I checked) and play it on a real NES.

The reason why there wasn't more awesome music like this 20 years ago has little to do with lack of inspiration from composers. The cartridges back then just didn't have a large enough capacity to hold a lot of information, so there were massive limitations on what could be put in the game. Had there been more complex pieces like this, you'd pretty much be listening to one track the entire game. It wasn't until larger capacities and newer systems that this became possible.

Yeah, D-Pad Hero 1 contains this song and three others; DH2 has six songs of similar length/complexity. Both ROMs are 256KB, a typical size in the mid-gen. NES era; half of that (128KB) is used for code/levels/music (DH1 didn't utilize all available space).

So music's costly, but with a music/arcade/puzzle-type game (no huge side-scrolling levels), you can still pack some stuff in 256KB. Super Mario Bros 3 is 384KB (256KB for code/levels/music data); with that you could fit a lot more content.

This definitely sounded NES to me as soon as it started. If anything, I'd expect to hear someone say, "This sounds more Famicom than NES". There are some games on the NES you can tell as soon as you start them if they'll have a crappy soundtrack and great gameplay, or great soundtrack and crappy gameplay, or good gameplay and great song (meaning no soundtrack).

If DH2 was a 256KB ROM, does that mean they didn't utilize any performance-enhancing chips like Lance Armstrong?

Haha it does, although the Folin Brothers did some amazing soundtracks for the NES which sound like this. It's not common though. :)
