The constitution protects the rights of people against an overreaching government. It also protects the people from the evil of others (like your naive example about red lights). Read John Locke and the social contract. He definded liberalism as freedom FROM government. It got corrupted to freedom FOR goverment by the progressives (communists).

It has never been about left versus right, but up versus down - the government versus the people. Parties are used to divide and conquer the people.
