Boston Bus Crash: Charter Bus Hits Overpass, Injuring 30+ in Crash After High School Trip to Harvard

BOSTON — A charter bus carrying high school students from Pennsylvania crashed when it tried to pass under a bridge in Boston on Saturday night, injuring more than 30 people, several seriously, and leaving some trapped inside for hours, the authorities said.

The bus carrying 42 students and adult chaperones was heading back to the Philadelphia area from Harvard when it struck an overpass on Soldiers Field Road, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

The authorities said the bus should not have been traveling on that road, and the State Police were investigating whether charges were warranted against the driver, who apparently failed to see a sign prohibiting the vehicle from taking that route.

A spokesman for the Philadelphia-based bus company had no immediate comment.

The State Police said at least 32 people were injured, three of them seriously. Photographs posted on the Boston Fire Department's Twitter feed showed firefighters standing on the top of the bus using backboards to rescue people. The last victim was taken out of the bus about 9 p.m., the department said.

Soldiers Field Road curves along the Charles River and passes by Harvard and Boston University. It is a major roadway to the Massachusetts Turnpike.
