A Tour of BC Ferries' Queen of Nanaimo. A 'B' Class Vessel originally built in 1964 that has has a rather quiet service life up until recently. In 2006, she underwent a major upgrade to prepare her for another 10 years of service. This included a complete update of passenger areas and new safety upgrades. In August 2010, she collided with the berth at Mayne Island. An event similar to the crash by the Queen of Oak Bay 5 years earlier. Early reports said that crab traps caught in the propellers were to blame, but later it was reported that like the Oak Bay Incident (where a cotter pin fell out) a loose tapered dowel was to blame.

  • wait a sec why are the cars on the vehicle decks facing different directions? because last time i was on her all the cars were facing the same direction

  • @legoguy8114 The Nanaimo runs the Tsawwassen to the Gulf Islands Route which has multiple stops along the way. When she docks at Long Harbour on Saltspring Island she always faces stern in. Every other Terminal is Bow in. You might have been on the Queen of Burnaby which has been running the Route the last few months. A few weeks back she had to face Bow-In at all Terminals because of a malfunction with her stern door.

I miss these older ships and their teak doors. Why can't they still build ships this way. They just had so much more charm.

  • good point i must of never noticed that it was the burnaby. probably because i must of slept soundly during the announcements
