Mark Staples of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center conducts an Extended Column Test in the northern Bridger Range. The snowpack is just over 5 ft deep, but this is shallow for this time of year given the recent storms. The isolated column pops off and propagates a fracture after 20 taps. They did not ski the slope.

  • Excellent advice! Especially now that the controlled areas are closing down.

    DIG DOWN TO THE GROUND.

  • Thanks for the location info. I also found this faceted weak layer in a pit I dug on some low-angled meadows (NE facing) below Naya Nuki peak on 3/30 before the recent added snowpack.
