On August 29, 2013, an Emergency Meeting of the Railroad Safety Advisory Committee, the first such meeting in the organization's 17-year history, was held in Washington, D.C. The meeting was called in response to a catastrophic accident, which occured July 6, 2013, involving a freight train with loaded tank cars of petroleum crude oil in Lac-Megantic, Quebec. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss necessary steps forward to prevent a similar accident from happening in the United States. Here, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administrator Cynthia Quarterman gives opening remarks.
