@STIXAHOY No, that is not a good way to teach. A fill is a rhythmical variation from the original groove, and it's purpose is to accentuate the meter. Simply placing a groove on top of another groove doesn't provide the same accentuation as playing a fill. Yes, in some cases, simply altering the dynamics on a few notes is ideal, but in other cases, playing a complex lick also complements the music well. Either way, your playing shouldn't be based on fills, that's the point.

There are two kinds of drummers: Those that worship Neal Peart and those that know the touch of a woman.
Groove the hell on Stanton.

A FILL IS A GROOVE..............GROOVE DRUMMERS PLAY GROOVE FILLS............. THAT IS WHAT I TEACH ALL MY STUDENTS. Don't think of a fill as a fill..........but a groove on top of the normal groove.

@underwearmodel18 No. Most drummers play for the thrill, but if you want to be successful then you've got to be able to make money. Besides, the statement basically implies that if you can't groove, then no one will appreciate you as a drummer. Burned.

@underwearmodel18 grooving brings me all the thrills i need.
-
@julianisdope dude groove may pay the bills but ask any drummer and they'll say they are playing for the thrill. burned.

@gooneybird47 But... all those groovy fills and grooves. woh! lots of feel and skill!
-
@gooneybird47 exactly! You don't see him showing off chops, but he is so groovy you never look at his playing and think he doesn't have a lot of chops, because his groove is just so epic!

i like how his hi hats look tarnished
@shotgundaisy "fills bring thrills but groove pays the bills"

The thing that I really like about Stanton's solo's are that they are all very groove based. Never once have I seen him do a "chops showcase", or a "dig me" type of solo...ALWAYS about the groove.
