This is an Update to my Computer Karaoke Tutorial that I made last Christmas
I still recommend purchasing a SCDG disc MAGIC TRACKS PLUS with 1200 karaoke songs from ebay, they are currently 20 dollars.
I have been doing this for a couple of years and I only sing about 50 different songs.
I recommend purchasing songs online:
sunflykaraoke.com for 2 pounds each
ABCDkaraoke.com.au for 2 dollars each
You can listen to part of the song on the website.
I use the Karma Karaoke program by Latshaw.
You can play the SCDG songs that you have ripped with RoxBox - downloaded from Roxbox.org and the songs you bought online
I still connect the computer to the LCD TV with a HDMI cable
The Audio goes from the laptop to a mixer - using a 3.5 mm STEREO to 6.5 MONO cable
I still use Nady duo wireless microphones - cheap, good and they last.
My wife made covers for the microphones from can/bottle coolers - to cover the switch
I use foam covers for the top of the mics - you can take them off and wash them.
From the mixer you can connect to either your surround sound system - get the right cable
I connect to a Behringer B212D Active Speaker on a speaker stand - This is a 12 inch 550 watt speaker with a built in Amplifier. You can connect you Ipod to it and use it as a stereo
If you connect an Ipod make sure you get a 3.5mm stereo to 6.5mm mono cable
Setting up is easy with the speaker - set the volume to 60% - with the volume you will notice 100% is at 12 O'Clock. Using it past 12 O'Clock is only when you plug a mic in and use it as a PA system.
Set the Mixer Main volume to zero impedance - this is about 3/4 volume. Next plug in the Laptop and turn up the volume for that channel till it is as loud as you want. Next plug in the microphone and turn up the volume until it is as loud as you want.
With the Microphone you have High Medium and Low graphic equalizer - adjust as required.
The mixer should be fine - I may turn up the mic volume for quiet singers and down for loud singers.

  • Thanks for the tutorial, it was very helpful! Quick question....I was debating between purchasing the Magic Tracks collection and the DK Millenium collection and was wondering why you preferred the Magic Tracks collection. I know that in your video, you thought the DK Millenium collection had bad sound quality. Was there other reasons?

Okay, I just had a look and listen to both sets of SCDGs.

DK Millenium (DKM) has 1815 songs.

Magic Tracks Plus (MTP) has 1207 songs.

You would only notice the audio difference if you had both to compare.

I prefer the song list of MTP, more songs I enjoy.

I see MTP for $20 on Ebay and DKM for $100

The best one to get if possible is Chartbusters 1 - 6 SCDGs. they have 2700 songs, with no repeats, excellent sound quality and excellent song list.
