@MrChanteyman for your info dories on the east coat and west coast have been powered for years so dont try to mention all that old salt rowing b.s. about the east coast
@Beefliverpie The Centennial was a sailing banks dory. It sailed from Gloucester, Ma. on June 15, 1876 and landed in Abercastle, Wales on August 10, 1876. It was the first west to east single handed sail crossing of the Atlantic. The Gloucester fisherman who accomplished this feat was Capt. Alfred "Centennial" Johnson. He did it to celebrate the 100th birthday of the USA. The vessel is now on display in thee Cape Ann Museum in Gloucester.
Where's the dory? Is that what they call a dory in the Northwest? Dories that fished in the North Atlantic were rowed with oars or sailed with a sprit-sail - no motor -no helm. The same with the dories of today (at least here in the Northeast)
Wow, I had no idea that you guys could beach them like that. I just bought set of dory plans from Spira International. I'm about to go start building the strongback. I bought the 18 foot version, the Carolinian.
Dories are the safest boats around. They are made for nasty weather. They were designed to fish of the Grand Banks in the North Atlantic a long trime ago and as you might know the Atlantic can get some nasty weather. Build or buy one is highly recomended. Spira International got some nice Dory plans.
been to pc a hundred times never been out on a dory though

@MrChanteyman I believe you are thinking of the Grand Banks dories. There are many dories. This I think is a Pacific Power dory.

In 1876 a dory named the Centenial was rowed single handed from New York to London. Don't know how long it took.
