Mel showed me his helmet from that race one time, complete with a tire tread from Gordies car! A miracle he was not killed that day.

There was reported to be oil on the track. Apparently, that's why Johncock slammed into Mel Kenyon's car, even though the yellow flag was already out.
Two safety workers had already crossed the track and were standing next to Kenyon's car. Mel had unstrapped and was standing up in his cockpit when he suddenly saw Johncock sliding directly at him!

Since this wreck involved Mario, Mel Kenyon and Gordon Johncock, I'm pretty sure that it wasn't "fatal" - all three are very much still alive.

one of those saftey workers is my grandfather, hes working his 50th and last year on the fire crew this May!
