That is really interesting, in China they go so overboard over Christmas decor and stuff that you'll gouge out your eyes. And it starts early and lasts till the Chinese New Year

@junkie4vids Yes, it's true. I used to live in Tokyo and that's one of the things I remember people doing. Lining up for KFC and Christmas cakes. I remember some Japanese friends telling me that you'd have to get on a waiting list at KFC to make sure you'd get chicken. It was so weird.
I have heard that KFC chicken is a popular Christmas food in Japan. True from your observations ?

What about birthdays in Japan? Are birthday's celebrated and if so, how?

@grassnuggets
Often families make no effort for birthdays, no presents or party..
but occasionally they do..

@TheJapanChannelDcom Thanks for answering my questions so quickly! I recall Aki sensei telling us something about the coming of age around 20 years old. We didn't go into a lot of detail about the topic though. Your answers are very informative and helpful. Is it still okay to buy a birthday or Christmas gift for someone in Japan even though they don't usually celebrate these days?

@grassnuggets
yes.. it would be OK..
but it will make them feel obliged to get you something..
could start one of the dreaded Japanese gift giving cycles!
