Oh I didn't come up with the concept, lots of people wire together parts kits.. and I'm sure other people have used a can to help support it.. but it's always a case by case situation as to how the details get done

Is there anything you can do to retain the function (like cocking the weapon, pulling the trigger, and whatnot), perhaps using a real receiver, but still have it unable to be fired?

Yup, like Weaponeer said, there are dummy receivers, but I was too impatient to find one so I went this route.. plus there is no way this can fire anything, so it's safe
