Irma Thomas is the perfect example of the pride of New Orleans, a true talent and a wonderful and compassionate woman. She's done many free concerts here and performs at the zoo every Mother's day for free. Her spirit and grace is one of the many reasons that so many of us would never leave even after all of the trials and hardships we've faced since Katrina blew through.
I saw her tonight at a free concert at Lincoln Center band shell here in NYC (she was the headliner for a show that included Betty Harris, John Boutte, Hot 8, and other great ones!)The show was 4P-10P! JUST GREAT!!! She made us cry when she did Raining, and At Last (My lonely nights are gone...). She is just so full of joy. I love her. She is a true GEM of the South!!!
I was lucky enough to meet Irma backstage and get some pics with her when she performed in Lafayette, LA. She's a very sweet person and her performance was outstanding! My dad saw her back in the 60s when he was in Lafayette, so I'm glad I got to see her, too.
I found this video because I was wishing I could be at the N.O. Jazz Fest, which began this weekend. Irma is a New Orleans treasure. I first saw her more than 40 years ago, performing for a High School formal. She was beautiful, soulful and unforgettable. She still is.. after all these years! God bless Irma Thomas!
one of my very favorite singers. I never tire of her recordings!

Irma could sing the phone book and make it sound beautiful. A truly great voice.
