Originally aired May 14, 1955 as part of the Jackie Gleason Show. The husbands and wives rehearse separate acts for a local talent show. Among the highlights of the boys' act is a tribute to Laurel & Hardy.

  • 1. this is based on the true life story of Jackie. He started out doing amateur contests in brooklyn. he was such a good ad-libber, he was hired to be the emcee.

and he did play the halsey theater.

jack prefered the live honeymooner skits as opposed to the filmed ones. it was obvious he loved playing off the audience ad-libbing. but apparently he also allowed others in the show to also change lines as things happened. give it a sense of spontaneity.

    thanks.

  • fantastic as usual my friend!!!

  • OMG That formaldahyde joke is worse than the joke Gleason tells Alice about King Arthur not wanting to "send a knight out on a dog like this." His reaction is gr8 tho.

It was a "casualty" of live versus filmed (Classic 39). The sketches were not as consistently great as the '55-'56 season but they all have a special quality about them.

So "could have been funnier" is not a serious, "negative" comment about one line but a generalized comment about the sketches. They were still the best comedy on Television.

  • Wonder if Carney rushed the line "It is a watch!": I imagine Gleason's line actually was "....watch your step" as the woman approached the stage. Funny stuff but could have been much funnier.
