the last scene is brilliant. Tolliver is a ruthless character who hardly has a conscience at all (as opposed to Al, who has one but hides it). He can't accept that over 18 years, he "cared for" (aka fed, abused and controlled) Joanie, and that she didn't develop some kind of feeling for him in response (like Trixie did for Al - and Al let her go, notably). Powers Boothe here did a great performance, interesting to see such a cold man in such a vulnerable position.
