Here's a few tips on refinishing vintage lacquered wood without stripping it. I've tried it on several items items so far with great results.

  • what if i need to change the stain color under the lacquer, w/o stripping?

  • @pgpeachess Unfortunately, you can't. The best you can do is apply a toner lacquer on top.

  • as usual bob your dedication to perfection amazes me. if i could absorb a quarter

of yor talent and knowledge i would be thrilled.

  • @chompo7 Thanks. I should have mentioned that this RCA is one of the more valuable in my collection. Definitely worth the effort to preserve it.

  • @bandersentv thanks! you're a pro!!!

  • Sometimes I wonder IF it would be better to simply make a new cabinet. Of course one would have to have some cabinet maker skills with hand tools to replicate the original, but at least it could be made of good solid hard woods rather than veneers and such. I have two old Philco radios. One has very beat up cab (1937). The other is restorable (1946). Two power tools would do it, a radial arm saw, and a router. Other than that, HAND TOOLS!

  • In a word...beautiful.
