***TURN UP YOUR SOUND***

I was filming a deer (a unicorn deer with 1 antler) after dark in infra red. A coyote howled. The startled deer jerked, looked up, and then ran. I was also startled and jerked the camera at the same time. I was a long way from any houses and decided to get out fast. I first looked around with my infra red video and possibly saw one of the coyotes. Then I very rapidly walked along a trail on the side of a field near a woods (I couldn't run because I had an expensive camera and it was dark, but I watched for trees to climb as I went). (The film is dark because I didn't stop and let the camcorder focus in the IR.) A pack of coyotes was in the woods and one coyote was very close to me. As I hustled along several other coyotes in different places began to howl (the sound of my footsteps are rapid). They may have been intimidating me or were howling before they attacked. Some of the coyotes on our farm are quite large - the only one to be shot was 50 pounds. The coyotes have howled like that at me before (for example once when I was near a den), but I always left quickly and did not tape the sounds.

Researchers told me that coyotes will often give a variety of sounds and howls in order to make others (other packs and species) think their pack is larger than it is. This keeps others away from their territory.

This strategy certainly worked on me! (These were taped on our farm by Scott and extracted from a longer film.)

(Our dogs at first tried to be friends with the coyotes. One is sometimes put out in a secure enclosure where the coyotes come around to "visit" during the night. After a while, the dogs became very afraid of the coyotes. I assume that somewhere along the line, they decided that the coyotes were dangerous. The coyotes probably attempted an attack. Now one of the dogs has developed a special "Coyote" bark. People can tell when there is a coyote prowling near the house because of her bark.)

**Coyotes can run at speeds up to 43 mph and can jump over 4 meters. It runs with its tail down. Some coyotes found in the east can weight over 100 lbs (see http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cache:WN3D-Pm0RMAJ:icwdm.org/wildlife/coyotes....). Comments and videos show these monster coyotes, e.g. see the discussion under, "Coyote attack," at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NT6sePYyeL0. (Some may be hybrids, such as of wolf and coyote.)

The coyote (Canis latrans) is also called the prairie wolf. It is a mammal belonging to the order carnivora and related to the domestic dog. They range from Panama through Canada. The name coyote came from Mexican Spanish. The Latin name means barking dog. Nineteen subspecies exist. Its fur is grayish-brown to yellowish-brown and can be black or white. It has a long bushy tail. The coyote is very vocal with a number of sounds including barks, yips, whines, growls, and howls.

Coyotes rarely attack humans (but the frequency is much less than attacks by domestic dogs) and the coyotes are often provoked. A published paper on the subject given on a government site can be found at: http://216.109.125.130/search/cache?ei=UTF-8&p=coyote+attack+humans&t....

  • coyotes dont attack people.they are more scared of you then you are of them.If you hear them makin noise they are chasing sumtin.I live in the woods basically ever time i seen a coyote it was by it self or very far away.Sumtimes there will be one that will com close just cause its dumb and noisy.

  • Coyotes are actually very small and frail, most large dogs could easily handle them, and a person could easily punt their face into the sky

  • Howling coyotes are just socializing. They shut the "F" up if they're sneaking up for a kill.

  • I LOVE this sound!!!

  • Coyotes are normally timid of people. They don't just go attacking ppl. Unless someone is hiking w their dogs, have been around their pups way too close or something like that. The coyotes around our farm have been killing the barn cats have been in the barn with 2 yearling foals and have been on the familys porches. Yeah that's nothing compared to hearing the howls. I try to scare them away from the farm and killing the new kittens by finding howling noises telling them to back off.

  • @Katragew wait what happened??? Is this a true story? The coyotes coaxed u to be able to talk to ur dd about something?? and then he passed away??

  • coyotes can be potentially dangerous if they perceive you as prey. Traveling alone through the woods filled with them is quite stupid. I know because I've been stalked by them with a buddy. They surrounded us in the brush and were less than 20 yards off. We growled at them, turned back to back, and didn't run. They chose not to get so close afterward but followed us the whole way out. They are very strong and brilliantly smart for their size. At night on their turf they aren't harmless.

  • this is what I heard the night before my father died. I had never heard coyotes howl before, so I called my dad to make sure that's what I heard. It was the last time I ever spoke to my dad. God Bless those coyotes. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have spoken to my dad ever again.

  • i was dirtbikin with some friends at night n we heard this too

  • @Skrikles Also there was a 18 yr old girl who got killed by Coyotes in Canada I think she was a singer I believe.

  • @XxStaticKillaxX I live in chino hills and coyotes are not that afraid of humans anymore. not too long ago a kid was almost taken by coyote in mid day infront of his mom at chino hills state park. and about 10 years ago in laguna woods a man in his car was surrounded by a pack of coyotes.
