It's a Cessna TU206E (C206E)

The controls aren't effective if the airplane is stalled. Maybe he stalled when the engine failed and it seemed as if the controls were malfunctioning.

The rear second utility doors are the giveaway to a 206.

That aircraft is a U206. The 207 is substantially longer than the 206..

a 172? never seen a 172 with a 3 blade prop. thats a 206/207. 172's dont have 2 sets of doors either.
