With over 60,000 prostitutes, 2,500 street children, and a third of the population in poverty, has Ukraine emerged from the former Soviet Union to become the illicit sex tourism capital of Europe?
During the global financial crisis Ukraine suffered badly. In fact, last year it was among the world's worst economic performers. As if that's not enough, it's now taken on the dubious mantle of the sex capital of Europe. Its becoming a hub for child pornography: they bring in not just women, but 13 or 14-year-old girls - that happens all the time., says hotel security man Sergey. Despite the best efforts of anti-sex-tourism groups such as FEMEN, the illicit industry seems to have become unstoppable and is consuming its poorest citizens by the day. If prostitutes and their pimps were punished harshly, half of them would think twice., says local, Denis.

  • These people have no choice. They needs jobs and economy. The government failed these poor woman who need to make a living. I wish there was another way for them.

  • 60000 prostitues in a country of 46 million is not rly that much ....lets assume 15 million women 16-45 so its like 0,5% of those women....every 200th women in this age group....hardly over the top and and fits the troubled economy.
