Sondheim wrote a lush, impressionistic score. None of that smoothness is carried over into this chamber orchestration. :(

Oh the genius of marketing a star! I bet if they cast Harvey Fierstein as Tony in the Revival of WEST SIDE STORY some of you would say "He so looks the part and is such a great fit with Phyllis Diller as Maria."

@HelenaKoonings and @andrewwinans Leigh Ann is actually the blonde at 00:42 on the ground with the suitcases on the right towards the Egermans with an apron on. Yeah the camera moves around so much it's hard to see. I would have loved to seen this

This looks mediocre at best. ALNM definitely requires a cast of singers who can act (as opposed to actors who can sing) to carry the score, which almost seems more like operetta than musical theatre to me. Especially with this particularly bare-bones pit orchestra, the thinness of some of the actors' voices is really apparent (and KZJ is clearly just gumming along at the end).

@altodivo I like Waddinham, but if people complained about Zeta-Jones being too young for this role, Waddingham definitely was as well. As for her performance, I can't say, as I live in the US and didn't see her in the role...I did like her as the Witch in "Into The Woods", though.

I actually like the restraint in the orchestration. It sort of carries with the subtext of the musical itself.

Either way you look at it, A Little Night Music is sophisticated. Beautiful, elegant, charming and sophisticated.
