Jupiter through a telescope. Io disappears behind Jupiter

Don't forget that in Galileo's time the air was cleaner and the upper atmosphere probably much more smooth and hardly polluted. I'd say if I was able to transport myself and my 10" Classic I'd probably be floored with the detail my scope would be showing me through the eyepiece. His little scope probably would be miserable today to view through and not much if any detail at all.

hi. i live in illinois. sometime in may or june i saw a spot in the early night sky (very early...like probably very shortly after sunset) that seemed extra bright. i noticed it there a few nights in a row. it's possible that one of the dippers (big or small) was sort of pointing at it (i think the non-handle end - so the spoon end - was pointing at it). was this a planet? thanks.
