Glasgow Athletics Association (GAA) Learn from Scottish Legends: Brian McAusland (14/10/2011)

Brian is a well known figure in the Scottish endurance running scene. Always interested in athletics, he started running during his National Service in 1956 and joined Clydesdale Harriers in 1957.




He describes himself as a 'not very good' runner although he ran 14:45 for 3 miles; 15:00 for 5000m; 52:12 for 10 Miles on the road and 2:32 for marathon.

He has made a major contribution to coaching. In the early 1960s he realised Clydesdale needed coaches and he started coaching the girls until he married in 1966. He came back to coaching in the early 1970's and began coaching men. He has coached Junior Scottish and senior internationalists including Rob McWatt in 1977 and Sam Wallace in 1985.




His group was not restricted to athletes from Clydesdale as it grew into a multi-club group when Frank Horwill asked him to coach Hugh Forgie and the group was joined by Alex Gilmour and Eddie Stewart.

At one time the group had 10 senior and two junior internationalists in it, all at 5000/10,000 and cross country. In the 1990s he had a very successful middle distance group including Grant Graham, Ewan Calvert, Des Roache, Kheredine Issedane, Allan Adams and Graeme Reid.

Brian became Scottish Staff Coach for 5000/10000 in 1986 then Group Coach for Endurance Events in the early 90's.

Although he retired officially in about 2007 (after 50 years coaching) he is still advising and supervising athletes one day a week.

The seminar was an opportunity to learn from Brian's experiences and took place at 6pm on Friday 14th October at the Toryglen Football Centre Seminar room.
