At a recent academic poster presentation, Charlotte Sadler
of the International School for Communities Rights & Inclusion talks about her project undertaken as part of UCLan's 2010 Undergraduate Research Internship Scheme.

Co-ordinated by UCLan's Centre for Research-informed Teaching, students were drawn from subjects across the arts, sciences, health and business to work on a huge variety of projects for a period of up to ten weeks.

The undergraduate research initiative, funded by HEFCE, is playing a leading role in the work of UCLan's Centre for Research-Informed Teaching.

Leading the Centre, which is more generally examining the UCLan interface between research and teaching across all disciplines, is Professor Stuart Hampton-Reeves. He said the initiative was proving as popular as ever among students and staff alike. "Once again undergraduate students from courses across the University have grasped the opportunities to gain their first taste of academic research," he explained. "Our academic staff have played a crucial role by supporting the scheme with potential projects and nurturing our students with their research ambitions.

"Several interns have produced research conclusions that have led directly to the inclusion of papers in leading, peer-reviewed journals. For me, that is the ultimate seal of approval."

The concept of undergraduate research is gaining widespread popularity at UCLan and an Undergraduate Research Society, believed to be the first in the UK, has now been formed by UCLan students.

  • That is fantastic! I have used myself there and it is great learning and benefit to all deaf learners.

I think all Universities should take this model.
