For those of you asking about finishing seams: a zig-zag stitch on most sewing machines will do in a pinch. I personally do a narrow zig-zag stitch, cut about one third to one half of an inch away from the seam I just made, fold that over and re-stitch with the same zig-zag. This has worked for me with most woven fabrics (cottons, linens, poly/cotton blends, ect) Knits, on the other hand, are a pain because they tend to roll at the raw edges when I work with them.

Every video I find is long and drawn out and still confusing. This was short, to the point, and pretty self explanatory. Thanks for the help guys!

I'm nervously getting ready to use this method on some oversized dress shirts I got for someone for Christmas. While the torso of the shirt is way too big, the neck fits perfectly, but the sleeves are too baggy as well, and it seems like it would be a problem to alter the sleeves because what will happen to the cuffs?

What is a serger? I'm new to sewing and have really wanted to try to improve my skills, but these videos I keep coming across are horrible and leave out soo much information. Even I knew that this video was sorely lacking in description of how to prevent fraying, even though I'm a novice!

Does anyone know of a channel where the seamstresses actually know what they're doing and are educated in sewing? That includes not just knowing how to pin, but also which stitch to use, how to prevent fraying, etc. It's a shame that I really would LOVE to learn how to sew but cannot seem to find a single competent teacher except my mother (who's very busy)!

...because I'm 28 and really want to learn how to get better at hemming/taking things in. However, most times I come across tutorials they are WRONG or leave our key information. I think a bunch of young people are attempting to just teach themselves without really knowing what the hell they're doing. They think that if it looks good, it must be good...but they don't realize that it must also be functional and last long-term.

A BIG problem is that this video doesn't address is how to really, properly sew a seam without FRAYING! The video doesn't mention tucking the seam under, or using a special stitch around the edges to prevent fraying. I am relatively new to sewing but I am appalled that even supposed "experts" do not seem to be aware of this or address it in how-to videos. It seems that no one under like, 50-60 years of age, knows how to accurately/effectively sew anymore, which is very discouraging...
