A look back in time of some of Northern Ireland's old cinemas, most of these old cinemas came out of the 1930's boom period of cinema history, sadly most of these buildings are no longer with us.
Class video, especially great to see the old tonic cinema that was in bangor again, the best cinema we ever had and lost, Especially good to see the interieor of the cinema, were did you get these pics? have you any more? Thanks for sharing the memories
@ sashmyfatherwore - Thanks for letting me know where this cinema was. I remember my Mum telling me that there were two cinemas on the Newtownards Road at one time, one was the New Princess and the other one was the Popular, or 'Pop'. This would have been about the 40's or so.
@zub 1964 The cinema @ 0.55 is The Ambassador on the Cregagh Road, East Belfast. As you can see its now a Wyse Byse.....shame !
I spend a few evenings myself courting on the back row of the Curzon lol The Strand on the Holywood Road is the last surviving independent cinema in Belfast.
As you say all those wonderful pre war buildings are now a thing of the past.
Is the one @ 0:55 the New Princess on the Newtownards Road ? My Mum and Dad used to do their courting in the Curzon, many years ago. So sad to see these lovely old cinemas derelict or demolished now. Good video, thanks for sharing.
Excellent video!
Can anyone name them?
I was in the Strand, Curzon and New Vic (but not the ABC).
Its a shame things go but life must progress, always good to remember our history though.

How did you get that picture of The Avenue at 0:41?
And that interior shot at 3:10 is so cool, it's like a cinema designed by Verner Panton!
Are these your images or did you find them online?

The destruction of these cinemas was a cultural crime-the French wouldn't have allowed it. The people who run Northern Ireland are philistines.
