The scene shows the characters defeated at there lowest point. But Jack being a true leader can show that. That is why he had to look into the ocean. That is why he had to protect the island.

i rewatched this episode after a long time and i wasnt expecting it to be the one where jin and sun died. i cried so hard that my mom thought i was choking and had to come in to my room to find out what was wrong...matthew fox is such an amazing actor....the pain on his face gets me every time!

i cried when jin and sun died, but then i was more just spaced out and shocked that jin sun, sayid and possibly lapidus had been killed off. Then when this scene happened.... it made the shit ten times more real and when hugo cried and you saw the look on kate face, i became emotional and started sobbing with jack, i always think that jack is just running all of these moments in his mind about jin and sun and then thinks about the promise he made her and it then truly hits home whats happened.

They captured this well.. because out of everybody they are left, and everyone else is dead... it was sad for them yet frustrating to Jack who's desperately tried to save everyone over the years. and can I just say... I loved how he reached out for Kate.!

i always make fun of Jack when he starts crying but i remember watching this episode as it aired and seeing this scene and just thinking about how justified the shedding of tears was right now.
